Skillz&Drillz: The 3 Target Drill
How do you practice? You don’t need much to hit the range and put in a focused, practical training session. In this video, I will explain how I use only 3 paper targets to maintain my skills. Be sure to track your times, so you know if you are making gains or losing time.

Product Review: The Kestral KST1000 Shot Timer
I love this timer! However, let me start off this blog post with stating that I did not receive this timer from Kestrel, nor did I get a discount to buy it, and I am in no way working with Kestrel to write this post. I purchased this timer on my own, with the hopes that it would stand up to everything I had heard about it. Now, with all that said, again, I love this timer! Previously Used Timers I have used timers for years. The ability to measure both speed and accuracy has

Skillz&Drillz: The 1-10 Drill
The 1 - 10 drill can be done with a pistol and/or rifle, and it can be completed at the 5, 7, or 10-yard line. Of course, the further away you are from the target, the harder the drill will be. To start, begin at the 5- yard line and work your way back. If you have purchased The Quiet Professional’s Logbook from our website, go to Section 3, enter this drill in your book, add up your core times (meaning your draw and split), and get a goal for your projected time. Then, sho

Does The Size Of Your Optic Window Matter?
I have been shooting red dots for a little over twelve years, and I have seen much innovation in the space. Durability and reliability have been the biggest advancements so far. At first, dots that were mounted on the slides would last around one thousand to two thousand rounds; certainly not enough to bet your life on them. Today, dots come from the factory claiming they will last approximately twenty thousand rounds. I have used a C&H Comp that lasted thirty-five thousan

Skillz&Drillz: Beat The Clock
The goal in Beat the Clock is to develop proficiency in the draw and reload. To begin this drill, you will need your gun, holster, mag pouch, magazine, some dummy rounds, and a timer or timer app. You will use NO live ammo in this drill, so check your gun and magazines to make sure they are clear. You will also need either a small spot on a draw fire target, a light switch, or even something as simple as a sticky note to aim at. On your timer, set a par time of 3.00 seconds.

Skillz&Drillz: The F.A.S.T. Drill
The F.A.S.T. Drill, the Fundamental Accuracy Speed Test, was developed by the late Todd Green of pistol-training.com . I love this drill because it combines multiple skills into one drill. If you have purchased The Quiet Professional’s Logbook from our website, go to Section 3 and enter this drill in your book. Add up your core times (the draws, splits, and reloads), develop a goal for your projected time, and shoot it to document the difference. Here is the course of Fire:

How To Use The Quiet Professional's Logbook
We have recently launched a logbook for pistol shooters. This book is designed to track your shooting progress with five core drills. These drills are the backbone for people who are looking to advance their skills as a firearms instructor, SWAT operator, law enforcement officer, or for people in action pistol competitions. In the text below, I will explain what the focus of each core drill is and some diagnoses if you see repeating patterns in your shooting. How scoring is b

Skillz&Drillz: The WSC Standards
Everyone has drills to evaluate a shooter's skill and answers the question, “Can you accomplish this?” Our standards are no different, except for one thing. They meet you where you are. This means the standards aren’t set out so far that no one can make the times, yet they will hold you accountable for your training. The skills held at certain line yards are exactly that; they’re skills. The times on the standards are based on my twenty years of experience shooting. One int

How To Put A Parallel Zero On Your IR Laser
There are two ways to zero your IR laser on your rifle; either a converging zero or a parallel zero. A converging zero is where your laser meets at the same point of impact as your sight does at a specific distance; Point of aim, point of impact. A parallel zero is when your laser runs along the side of your sight and barrel for infinity, like parallel lines. Which one do I prefer? A parallel zero. Let’s start by understanding the path of the bullet. Based on your zero, the

Skillz&Drillz - How To Use The WSC Target
You may have seen us use our WSC Training Target in either our Pistol Mounted Optics or Rifle classes. The sky is the limit as to how many ways you can use this target, and how creative you can be. We bundle packs of twenty-five targets at a time with glue at the top to make your training more convenient. The glue allows you to easily peel the targets from a compact bunch, just like a sticky note pad . This design was intended for you to be able to use one target to build a

Why Canting Your Mag Pouches and Holster Matters
As we travel all over the U.S., teaching law enforcement and military officers, we see a wide range of skills and equipment setups. Some officers are permitted to change the way they set up their holsters and mag pouches, while other agencies are still stuck in the 80’s where everything must be the same for each officer. There are two things I recommend when it comes to setting up your mag pouches and holsters. The first thing I recommend is separating your mag pouches. Thi

Introducing Skillz&Drillz
You are missing the foundations of shooting if you are an instructor that is not teaching, or have been to a pistol class where the instructor did not talk about the five fundamentals of shooting. In this video, I name and break down the fundamentals of shooting a handgun. Pistol fundamentals break down like this: Stance, Grip, Sight Alignment, Sight Picture, and Trigger Control. Some people include breathing as part of the fundamentals of shooting a handgun, I do not. Unle

Who Really Benefits From A Carry Compensator?
I’ve had the chance to spend some time with the new S&W Carry Comp , and it's not bad for a factory gun. My perspective comes from competing in USPSA for several years. I have spent some time shooting open guns. These pistols are mostly 2011-style guns, they typically have a 2 to 3-chamber compensator on the end, and are truly built to shoot flat. The Staccato XC is a 1-chamber compensator built from the factory and performs very well. Does the Smith & Wesson Carry Comp comp

Do C&H Precision Optics Really Hold Up?
C&H Precision launched their line of red dot optics in January of this past year, and I was lucky enough to receive one of their COMP optics and DUTY optics. The COMP optic is very similar to a Trijicon SRO. I’ve been shooting SROs for a couple of years now, so I’m very familiar with the size of the window, the dot, and its performance. In fact, I preferred this optic over many others until the COMP came out. The COMP optic has an aluminum housing, a built-in rear sight and

Class Spotlight: Pistol Mounted Optics Hosted By Jacksonville Sheriff's Office
Our most recent Pistol Mounted Optics class was held at Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Florida. In this class, we were asked to provide the instruction and training for road officers to certify carrying a red dot on the street. We had twenty-two eager to learn, officers put in the twenty hours of hard work to change over to the dot. Officers learned so much more than just the characteristics of shooting a dot in this class. Don’t just take our word for it, check out this d

How ACE Virtual Shooting Has Improved My Performance On The Range And Enhanced My Practice At Home.
Recently, I purchased ACE VR and have been using it for the past couple of months. ACE VR is a realistic shooting game that allows me to practice dry firing, competition shooting, target transitions, visual acuity, tempo of trigger presses, and so much more. Dry fire has always been a very important part of my development, but it can get stale and even boring occasionally. This tool is exactly what I have been looking for. Designed with real USPSA stages I can practice what
