The goal in Beat the Clock is to develop proficiency in the draw and reload. To begin this drill, you will need your gun, holster, mag pouch, magazine, some dummy rounds, and a timer or timer app. You will use NO live ammo in this drill, so check your gun and magazines to make sure they are clear. You will also need either a small spot on a draw fire target, a light switch, or even something as simple as a sticky note to aim at.
On your timer, set a par time of 3.00 seconds. On the first beep, draw the pistol. By the second beep, you should have a solid grip, an acceptable sight picture, and your trigger prepped. Try to use up the entirety of the time when you first begin. This means you should be working at about 20% of your ability. If 3.00 seconds is pushing you too fast, adjust the time to be at your 20%. After 10 reps, drop by 0.20 seconds. Repeat this procedure until you have reached a total par time of 0.80 seconds. Be sure that everything is being followed: a solid grip, an acceptable sight picture, and your trigger prepped. Find where the wheels come off. Make sure you feel what you need to feel and see what you need to see.
If you want to take this drill to the next level, include a reload in between beeps. After loading your magazines with dummy rounds, set a par time of 6.00 seconds. Start with the slide locked to the rear, an empty magazine in the gun, and your sights on target. On the first beep, hit the mag release and perform a reload. Move your eyes to the spot on the target you are presenting to and prep the trigger. By the second beep, you should have the gun loaded, a solid grip on the gun, an acceptable sight picture, and your trigger prepped. Try to use the entirety of the time, and after 10 reps, drop by 0.50 seconds. Continue to repeat this procedure until you have decreased the par time to 1.00 seconds. Be sure that everything is being followed: you have a solid reload, a solid grip, an acceptable sight picture, and your trigger prepped. Find where the wheels come off, and feel what you need to feel while seeing what you need to see.
