January Skillz&Drillz: Triple Bill Drill

The Triple Bill Drill is an excellent skill to build in so many aspects of shooting. Based on how you have the targets set up, you can define acceptable sight pictures, trigger pulls, and recoil management.
Before you start you’ll want to be sure your ammo budget can support this drill. It’s 18 rounds at a time, 6 rounds on three targets, and if you only budget a small amount, you will burn through your rounds really fast. Mix and match the target array each time you run it. Shoot close to far, far to close, or straight across at a specific distance. When training for nationals, they would always place covered targets at 25 yards or greater. So for my practice, I would have targets straight across at 30 yards. I broke them down like this: open target, NO SHOOT covering 50%, and then NO SHOOT covering 80% of the target. The 6 rounds in a row help develop the pattern of sight picture and consistent trigger pulls. Sight discipline becomes the focus as you get progressively harder on the array of targets.
Sometimes, two rounds just aren’t enough to develop the breaking point on each presentation of the target. Once a cadence is established and you have found the “too fast” run, then two rounds each target should be easier to repeat on demand. Of course, you need to track your times to know if you can push harder or when you have hit a breaking point, too. You can do this in your Logbook.
